As parents we get wrapped up in feeding and keeping up with our mini me’s. At some point, however, be it a doctor’s advice or the sight of a tiny tooth popping through their gum; we reach the point where we ask, “When do I need to take my child to the dentist?”. Some doctors recommend age two, some age one.
In reality, we need to expose them to the concept that it is normal to have a professional put a noisy tooth brush in their mouth at a young age. Here at Jordan Job DDS we recommend bringing your child with you to your hygiene appointment. Let them familiarize themselves with our dental environment. They can grab a juice box and color a picture and see what the visit can be like. Let them meet the staff and get to know us so they feel at home here. If they are willing to cooperate that day, we can maybe even have a short look in their mouth. If they are old enough to sit in the chair (which varies w/ age usually at 2 years old) Sandy or Lisa can tickle their front teeth and show them the cool water gun and air straw we use to wash and dry teeth with. As they get older we count their teeth with the prophy brush as we gently run it over their incisors, and on the way out they get to pick out a toy in addition to their very own toothbrush and toothpaste. Exposure and trust building helps your child feel confident and connected when they come to the dentist. It is never too late or too early to start the experience and help them become familiar with their teeth and the people who will help their teeth stay healthy and clean.
