Effective Techniques for Whiter Teeth

Everyone desires a bright, white smile. Whiter teeth can boost your confidence and make a great first impression. Many people go to great lengths to achieve that perfect smile. Many ways to whiten teeth effectively exist, from unique treatments to everyday habits.

Maintaining your white smile is just as important as achieving it. By understanding and applying these techniques, you can enjoy a whiter, healthier smile for a long time.

Professional Teeth Whitening Options

In-Office Treatments

In-office teeth whitening is popular for those looking for quick and noticeable results. Dentists use potent bleaching agents to make your teeth several shades lighter in just one visit. It’s not the kind of Bleach you may be thinking of, it is the hydrogen peroxide in the “bleach” that helps illuminate your smile. The procedure usually takes about an hour and involves applying a potent gel to your teeth. Sometimes, a particular light or laser speeds up the process to activate the bleaching material.

The results from in-office treatments can last up to a year, depending on your habits and oral care. While this method is effective, it can be expensive. However, the immediate results and professional supervision often make it worth the cost for many people.  A great scenario for in-office whitening treatments would be for a wedding, a job interview, family photos, prom or formal events, or professional headshots.

At Jordan M. Job DDS, we use a product called GLO Whitening. Many patients experience sensitivity with other products. With Glo, we consider what patients have said about sensitivity and provide them with a product that provides great results!

Take-Home Kits

Another effective option is to get take-home whitening kits from your dentist. These kits include custom-made trays and a firmer bleaching gel than over-the-counter options like Crest White Strips. We also offer the take-home GLO whitening kit, which, instead of taking impressions of your teeth to create the trays, comes with a premade tray to fit all sizes and instructions for use at home. You can also ask one of our staff for instructions on using it. They can answer any questions that you may have about purchasing the kit.

Typically, you’ll wear the trays for a couple of sessions, about 8 minutes/session. While wearing the tray, the blue UV light in the tray activates the bleaching gel to show instant results when you are done, even with the first session. While this method may take slightly longer to achieve the desired results than in-office treatments, it’s more affordable and still produces excellent results. It also allows you to whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home.

Over-the-Counter Whitening Products

Whitening Toothpaste

Whitening toothpaste is one of the most accessible and affordable ways to whiten teeth. It contains mild abrasives and chemicals that help remove surface stains. Unlike other whitening methods, toothpaste doesn’t change the color of your teeth but can help maintain a brighter smile by removing daily stains.

Using whitening toothpaste is as simple as brushing your teeth. For the best results, use the toothpaste twice a day. Over time, you’ll notice your teeth looking cleaner and a bit brighter. However, this method is best for those looking to maintain their white smile rather than achieve drastic results. We also recommend brushing less aggressively than you normally would with a traditional toothpaste because the abrasives in the toothpaste can cause attrition if brushed too aggressively.

Whitening Strips and Gels

Whitening strips and gels are popular choices for at-home teeth whitening. These products usually contain peroxide, which helps bleach the teeth. Whitening strips are thin, flexible plastic strips coated with the whitening gel. You apply the strips to your teeth and leave them on for a set amount of time, usually around 30 minutes.

Whitening gels come in small tubes and are applied directly to the teeth using a brush. Both methods should be used once or twice daily for a few weeks. They can make your teeth a few shades whiter. These products are more affordable than professional treatments but may take longer to show results. They are a good option for those on a budget who still want effective whitening.  However, we have seen that if you have more sensitive teeth, these products can irritate and cause sensitivity to your teeth compared to the take-home kits we provide.

Natural Remedies for Whiter Teeth

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a popular and natural method for whitening teeth. Its mild abrasive properties help remove surface stains. Many people find that brushing with baking soda a few times a week can make their teeth look cleaner and brighter. Simply wet your toothbrush, dip it in baking soda, and brush as usual.

Don’t overdo it, as excessive use can wear down your enamel. This method is best used in moderation. Many whitening toothpastes also contain baking soda, offering a convenient way to include it in your routine without extra steps.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is another effective natural remedy for whiter teeth. It is a bleaching agent that can help remove stains from your teeth. You can use it as a mouthwash before brushing your teeth. Make sure to dilute it with water; a good ratio is half water and half hydrogen peroxide. Swish the mixture around your mouth for about a minute, then spit it out and brush your teeth as usual.

Additionally, you can make a paste by mixing hydrogen peroxide with baking soda. Apply this paste to your teeth and leave it on for a few minutes before thoroughly rinsing. Like baking soda, use hydrogen peroxide in moderation to avoid any potential damage to your teeth and gums.

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an ancient practice that involves swishing oil in your mouth to improve oral health and whiten teeth. Coconut oil is commonly used for this method. The oil helps remove bacteria and plaque that can cause teeth to look dull and yellow.

To try oil pulling, put a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth and swish it for 10-15 minutes. Then, spit it out, rinse your mouth with water, and brush your teeth. Doing this daily can help keep your teeth clean and gradually make them whiter.

Maintaining Your White Smile

Good Oral Hygiene Practices

Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial for keeping your teeth white. Brush your teeth at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste. Brush for at least two minutes to cleanse your teeth properly. Don’t forget to floss daily to remove food particles and plaque between your teeth that a toothbrush can’t reach.

An antiseptic mouthwash can also help kill bacteria and maintain a healthy mouth. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are essential to keep your teeth healthy and prevent stains from forming.

Foods and Drinks to Avoid

Certain foods and drinks can stain teeth, so it’s best to limit your intake. Coffee, tea, red wine, and dark sodas are common culprits. If you can’t avoid these drinks, try using a straw to minimize contact with your teeth and rinse your mouth with water afterward.

Foods like berries, tomatoes, and soy sauce can also cause discoloration. Eating crunchy fruits and vegetables like apples and celery can help clean your teeth naturally. They scrub your teeth as you chew, helping to remove surface stains.

Conclusion

A bright white smile can make you feel more confident and improve your appearance. Choosing the correct teeth whitening method depends on your needs and lifestyle. Always consider the pros and cons of each option. Consistency is critical to achieving and maintaining a whiter smile regardless of your chosen method.
